My mother needs her car!

  • This reflects the ignorance, lack of insight, and selfishness of families to insist that their frail impaired older parents must be allowed to continue to drive their car when they are clearly medically no longer fit to drive.

  • I frequently see elderly people who were referred to me because they are confused and unable to manage alone at home.  Then when I diagnose them with significant dementia and confusion and tell them that they are no longer medically fit to drive a motor vehicle, their daughter usually says to me “You can’t do that!”  “My Mother needs her car”.

  • You’ve got to be kidding me! Many families think it is OK for a confused older person to drive a car!

  • They can’t look after themselves alone at home, they can’t even use a microwave oven yet their family still think it is okay for them to drive a motor vehicle!

  • These impaired older drivers can barely walk, are so slow in thinking, movement and reflexes, vague and confused, yet family who insist that they can still drive a car commonly say “Mum is pretty good for her age, very sharp mentally!” indicating severe denial of their physical and cognitive impairments.

  • Most people do not understand the high crash risk and danger that these impaired older drivers pose when still driving.
