Is memory loss in old age normal?
No it is NOT!! Memory does not decline in old age!
An older person’s memory simply does not deteriorate to the point that it affects their day-to-day function.
Most families love to blame “old age” as the cause for memory loss in their elderly parents.
Blaming “old age” for memory loss just denies older people an early accurate medical diagnosis and proper medical care!
Whenever I hear a younger son or daughter say to me that their elderly parent’s memory is “not bad for their age” I am immediately suspicious that they may have an underlying significant cognitive impairment or dementia.
You would not say about your teenage child or 22 year old son that their memory is “not bad for their age”, yet we do this with our elderly parents.
Many older people in their 80’s and 90’s are still very active, productive in their lives, and giving advice and support to younger family members!
